The Burns Paiute Tribe of Oregon is narrowing down locations for a proposed off-reservation casino.
Diane Teeman, the chairman of the Burns-Paiute Ontario Development Corporation, said eight sites are being considered. The tribe wants to go where the community welcomes a casino.
“We don’t want to push gaming on anybody,” Teeman said at a meeting with local officials, The Ontario Argus Observer reported. “We want to make sure people are comfortable with it.”
The locations are in the Ontario area, near the Idaho border. Ontario is about 130 miles from tribal headquarters in Burns.
The tribe previously filed a land-into-trust application for a site in Ontario in October 2006. The Bush administration stopped work on the application in January 2008, saying the tribe failed to submit enough information.
