NIGC nominee gets warm welcome at confirmation hearing

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a confirmation hearing last Wednesday for Tracie Stevens to be chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission.

Stevens, a member of the Tulalip Tribes of Washington, has extensive experience in Indian gaming issues. Unlike nearly every one of the past NIGC chairs, she isn't an attorney, an issue that committee members said might be a benefit.

“I know she will bring a new and unique perspective to NIGC,” said Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) at the hearing.

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota), the committee chairman, hopes to vote on Steven's nomination soon. The commission has not had three permanent members for more than two years.
