Michigan smoking ban won't affect Indian, Detroit casinos

On May 1, smoking will be banned at bars, restaurant, hotels and other businesses serving food or beverages in Michigan but tribal casinos and state-licensed casinos won't be affected.

The state lacks jurisdiction in Indian Country so it can't enforce the ban. Tribes could negotiate the issue in their Class III gaming compacts but that hasn't happened yet.

The three state-licensed casinos in Detroit were granted an exemption under the law.
