Meskwaki Tribe opposes proposed casino in home county

The Meskwaki Tribe is opposing a state license for a casino in Tama County.

The tribe operates the Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel and is the largest employer in the county. Signature Management is proposing a casino just a few miles away.

"Many people in the industry are concerned that Iowa has reached the saturation point and we run the risk of hurting existing facilities by setting up casinos that will start out at a competitive disadvantage due to shaky financing or the inability to provide amenities and entertainment to compete in the long run," the tribe said in a letter to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, The Des Moines Register reported.

Signature Management management believes the market is big enough to support a new casino. There's already a state-licensed facility in the county.
