Bill that targets Tohono O'odham Nation casino advances

A bill that seeks to stop the Tohono O'odham Nation from pursuing an off-reservation casino is set for a final vote in the Arizona House.

SB1109 includes language that allows the city of Glendale to annex land owned by the tribe without the tribe's consent. Incorporation would presumably prevent the tribe from putting the land into trust under a land claim settlement act.

The House previously passed the anti-casino provision as part of HB2297. But the president of the Arizona Senate said he wouldn't hold hearings on it.

The House then included the language as part of SB1a09, which already passed the Senate. The bill could affect any tribe in the state.

The Tohono O'odham Nation plans to use 135 acres of unincorporated land near the city of Glendale for the $500 million West Valley Resort.
