Lobbyist with tribal ties donated to anti-gaming governor

A lobbyist with connections to the Poarch Band of Creek Indians donated $10,000 to the political action committee for the anti-gaming governor of Alabama.

Steve Windom is a lobbyist for Azalea City Racing Club, a racetrack in which the tribe is a majority owner. He told the Associated Press that Gov. Bob Riley (R) asked him to contribute to GOV PAC.

Donations to GOV PAC have gone entirely to Citizens for a Better Alabama, a group that opposes electronic gaming in the state. Additionally, Riley has set up a task force that has shut down a number of non-Indian facilities that have operated the machines.

The leader of the task force at one point said he wanted to take on the tribe.
