City's legal bills for Fond du Lac Band gaming case are growing

City council members in Duluth, Minnesota, are being asked to spend another $300,000 on a gaming lawsuit against the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

The city has already approved $760,000 to pay an outside law firm to litigate the case. “There’s no doubt in my mind that the city’s legal costs in this case will exceed $1 million,” council member Jim Stauber told The Duluth News Tribune.

The legal bills keep rising even though the city won a decision that said the tribe has to share revenues from the Fond-du-Luth Casino. The tribe agreed to share the money in an 1994 agreement.

The tribe says the agreement violates the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.
