The Poarch Band of Creek Indians contributed $2.8 million to politicians in Alabama in the last year, The Birmingham News reports.
About half the money was spent in just the past few months. The tribe donated $1.4 million between June 29 and October 26, the paper said.
"They have a near-monopoly now," University of Alabama professor William Stewart told the paper. "They like things the way they are. They don't want efforts made to interfere with their operations."
The tribe operates three Class II facilities.
