New York Gov. David Paterson (D) says the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is violating the Class III gaming compact.
The compact requires the tribe to share a portion of revenues with the state. The tribe is currently withholding the money and says it wants to send it directly to local communities.
"We give them exclusive rights and they pay us," a spokesperson for Paterson told The Watertown Daily Times. "If they're not paying us, it's a violation of the compact at its most basic level."
The state wants to meet with tribal leaders to discuss the issue.
