Lac View Desert Band loses decision in Mexican gaming matter

The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians of Michigan lost a ruling in a dispute over a gaming investment in Mexico.

The tribe invested $6.5 million for a casino in Guadalupe, Mexico. The agreement called for disputes to be resolved in the Arizona state court system.

The tribe sued after a dispute arose about the project. But as part of the litigation process, the tribe was unable to serve papers on all of the defendants.

As an alternative, the tribe served the papers via certified mail, e-mail, Federal Express and regular mail. But the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that the tribe must go through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico.
