House committee approves measure to regulate Internet gaming

The House Financial Services Committee voted 41-22 on Wednesday to approve H.R 2267, the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act.

The committee amended the original version of the bill to address tribal concerns. One amendment requires the Treasury Department to engage in "meaningful consultation" with tribes before implementing the law.

The same amendment also states that tribes that wish to offer Internet gaming aren't required to renegotiate their Class III compacts.

Another amendment also requires Treasury to consult tribes before it updates Internet gaming regulations.

Another amendment addresses lotteries run by tribes and states.
