The Poarch Band of Creek Indians donated $1.4 million to candidates in the recent Alabama primary, The Birmingham News reports.
The tribe and its gaming authority, PCI Gaming, were the second-largest gaming donors, the paper said. The money went to 56 political action committees before being funneled to various candidates.
Overall the gaming industry spent $4.1 million on the race. "Gambling is a big issue," David Lanoue, the chair of University of Alabama's political science department, told the paper. "It's a life-and-death struggle for them, survive and thrive or shut down."
