Salt River Tribe optimistic for economy with new casino

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Community of Arizona opens the Talking Stick Resort today in a tough economic climate.

But casino executives are optimistic the $440 million facility will weather the storm. "We're seeing the country coming out of the recession," said Russ Burbank, the chief operating officer of Casino Arizona, told The Arizona Republic. "We can take the Valley out of the funk and bring it back."

The resort features 240,000 square-feet of gaming space and a hotel with 497 rooms. There's also conference space, eight restaurants, a spa, and a cigar and wine bar.

"It's a package that is difficult to compete with," Rachel Sacco, the Scottsdale Convention and Visitors Bureau president, told the paper. "We're lucky it's here on this side of town."

The facility replaces a smaller casino at the site.
