The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation of California received a $1.1 million rebate for employing "green" energy practices at the Cache Creek Casino Resort.

The tribe participates in the Shift and Save program at PG&E. Between noon and 6pm, the casino operates off the grid by turning to a thermal energy system.

The shift to solar power saves the tribe about $400,000 a year. "Stewardship has always been a critical part of our identity as Native people," said Chairman Marshall McKay, The Woodland Daily Democrat reported.

In addition to the 250 kilowatt solar farm, the tribe operates a three hydrogen fuel cells and a wastewater treatment facility. The tribe says it generates about 20 percent of its total energy usage on site.
