Report cites gaming challenges facing Connecticut tribes

The Center for Policy Analysis at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth released the annual New England Casino Update today.

The report says Connecticut's two tribal casinos have seen a drop in revenues due to the recession and competition in other states. New York and New Jersey visitation to the tribal casinos dropped significantly while Pennsylvania visitation has all but disappeared.

Massachusetts visitation dropped but their spending at the tribal casinos increased, according to the report. Lawmakers in Massachusetts are discussing proposals to expand gaming.

Gross gaming revenues at Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods, owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, fell 7 percent last year, according to the report.

At Mohegan Sun, owned by the Mohegan Tribe, revenues fell 10.3 percent, the report said.
