Members of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of New York go to the polls on Saturday to consider an off-reservation casino.
The tribe has held a series of public meetings to discuss the proposed casino in the Catskills, about 90 minutes north of New York City. Tribal leaders support the project but the last time a referendum was held, it was rejected by voters.
"I think people were surprised at the outcome of the last referendum," former chief Lorraine M. White told The Watertown Daily Times.
Tribal leaders hope the Obama administration will be more receptive to off-reservation casinos.
