Congressman pushes Obama on off-reservation gaming

Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-New York) says off-reservation gaming will boost the economy in the Catskills region of New York.

The Seneca Nation, the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians want to open casinos in the Catskills. But the Bush administration said the area is too far from their reservations.

Hinchey is pushing the Obama administration to reverse course. “If the people in this community want to do it, recognizing it is going to be important for the economy, create jobs and bring back places like Monticello vibrantly, then they have every right to do it,” he said at a press conference, Mid-Hudson News Network reported.
