Employees at Auburn casino organize into unions

About 40 percent of the employees at the casino owned by the United Auburn Indian Community of California have organized into unions.

About 810 drivers, food-service workers and other employees at Thunder Valley Casino are joining either Unite Here or the Teamsters, The Sacramento Bee reported. Excluded for now are about 1,100 dealers, cashiers and other employees.

"Ultimately, it was the employees' decision, not a decision of the casino management or the tribe," spokesman Doug Elmets told the paper. "We will honor their decision."

Another 200 employees at the tribe's new hotel will join the Teamsters next year.
