North Dakota charities want electronic gaming

Charities in North Dakota hope a new study will lead to electronic games at non-Indian facilities.

The North Dakota Legislature authorized a study of laws affecting charitable gambling and pari-mutuel horse racing. A report is due in 2011 and could be used to argue for expanded gaming in the state.

“We would like to have something that is a little more up-to-date and cost effective,” Karen Breiner, the president of the Charitable Gaming Association of North Dakota, told the Associated Press.

The four tribes with land in the state operate gaming facilities on their reservations. The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians at one point proposed an off-reservation casino but ran into tribal and state opposition.
