Nottawaseppi Huron not seeking compact revision
The Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians is not seeking to revise its Class III gaming compact with Michigan, Chairwoman Laura Spurr said. The tribe agreed to share 2 percent of revenues from the FireKeepers Casino with local communities. Officials in Calhoun County say there are rumors of a potential change in the deal. “We don’t know what might happen, but we’re assuming the compact will stay the same,” Spurr told The Battle Creek Enquirer in response. “We told (Calhoun County) to go forward ... It’s better to have something on paper than be forced to do something under pressure.” The county is moving slowly because of a dispute that arose in connection with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. Officials in Berrien County couldn't agree how to distribute the tribe's revenues so over $6 million was in limbo for nearly two years. The FireKeepers Casino will open in early August.
