Menominee Nation files off-reservation casino suit

The Menominee Nation of Wisconsin filed a new lawsuit over the rejection of its off-reservation casino.

The Bush administration rejected the proposed Kenosha casino in January, saying the gaming site was too from the reservation. The tribe says the decision was based on internal policies that are contrary to law.

“Our view is that it was an appropriate time to bring this issue back to the forefront as they consider what to do on this and related manners,” spokesperson Evan Zeppos told The Kenosha News. “We are cognizant of the fact that is still a relatively new administration, but with the circumstances in Kenosha, the continued economic problems and the ongoing increases in unemployment, we feel our project makes more sense than ever.”

The tribe withdrew a similar lawsuit in April but said it might file it again.
