BIA urged to reject off-reservation casino

The Bureau of Indian Affairs received more than 1,000 letters in opposition to the off-reservation casino sought by the Shawnee Tribe, News 9 reports.

Only six letters were sent in support of the project. But the tribe says it expects more to speak in favor when the BIA holds public hearings.

The tribe was restored to recognized by an act of Congress. The law could have allowed the tribe to open a casino just about anywhere in Oklahoma but it was amended to require the tribe to follow the Section 20 process of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The tribe wants to build a casino in Oklahoma City.
