The city of Glendale, Arizona, is formally opposing the off-reservation casino sought by the Tohono O'odham Nation.
City and tribal officials met on Monday to discuss the $500 million project. But city attorney Craig Tindall claimed the tribe couldn't provide detailed information about the impacts of the casino.
"They spring it on the city and then say, 'Let's talk,'" Tindall told The Arizona Republic. "It's very difficult to negotiate under those types of circumstances."
The tribe plans to build the casino on a 134-acre site in Glendale. The land was acquired with funds that were authorized by an act of Congress so the Interior Department may not have much discretion in considering the tribe's land-into-trust application.
