"There is one component of the Republican and governor’s proposals that we strongly oppose:
The provision to allow extended liquor service at the region’s two casinos. The governor estimates that by allowing round-the-clock alcohol service, the state can generate an additional $1.3 million in gambling revenue — about 1 percent of the total revenue shortfall this year.
Is there nothing else that can be done to fill that 1 percent gap?
Have we, as a state, become so desperate for money that we’re now willing to ply casino patrons with alcohol in the wee hours of the morning in the hopes that they’ll pump another roll of quarters into the slot machines?
And then what, let them get behind the wheel of an automobile and leave?"
