New York governor links Seneca casino to taxes

New York Gov. David Paterson (D) said he won't move forward with an off-reservation casino with the Seneca Nation until the tribe resolves its taxation issues.

Paterson said he is willing to talk about the casino. But he said tribal retailers have an unfair advantage on cigarette and gasoline sales.

"I am certainly willing to entertain discussions," said Paterson, The Buffalo News reported. "But, I'm really not interested in taking motion in a direction until I feel there is equity that we have with a number of the (Indian) nations."

The tribe needs state approval for the proposed casino in the Catskills.
