Mohegan Tribe pushes for casino in Massachusetts

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut is stepping up efforts to build a casino in Massachusetts.

The tribe is opening an office in Palmer, in the western part of the state, and has hired a local lawyer to push the casino. A casino executive was in town yesterday to meet local officials and talk about the project.

The effort depends on the legalization of gaming in the state. Gov. Deval Patrick (D) supports casinos but Democratic lawmakers defeated a bill last year.

Rep. Robert A. DeLeo (D), the new House speaker, is more open to gaming so supporters are hopeful for passage this year. The Mohegans would compete for a state license.
