A non-Indian racetrack owner who opposes off-reservation gaming donated $125,000 to the political action committee of a former U.S. Congressional candidate, The New Mexico Independent reports.
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino owner Stan Fulton made two donations to Madrid PAC, Justice for America. The contributions around the same time that then-state attorney general Patricia Madrid (D) announced her office's opposition to the off-reservation casino sought by Jemez Pueblo.
The donations drew objections from former Sen. Pete Domenici (R) and former Rep. Steve Pearce (R), who filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission. The complaint was dismissed but former Rep. Heather Wilson (R), who defeated Madrid in 2006, claims the FBI was looking into the situation.
The Bush administration rejected the Jemez casino in January 2008.
