Leaders of the Seneca Nation of New York voted unanimously to suspend Maurice John Sr. from his post as treasurer of Seneca Gaming Corp.
The tribe accuses John of "gross misconduct and unethical behavior." John and his top aide allegedly misappropriated $120,000 in tribal funds, according to an internal investigation.
"The integrity of the Seneca Nation is violated when the laws that are in place to govern our people honestly and fairly are victimized," Jacqueline Bowen, the tribe's treasurer, said in a statement, Business First of Buffalo reported. “A theft from the nation’s resources is a theft from its people
John is the immediate past president of the tribe. His executive assistant, Richard Frank, also serves on the tribal council and can only be removed through official impeachment proceedings.
