Tohono O'odham Nation waited years on casino

The Tohono O'odham Nation waited more than five years to announce plans for an off-reservation casino in Glendale, Arizona, ABC15 reports.

The tribe created a Delaware corporation called Rainier Resources to buy 143 acres in Glendale on August 21, 2003. The tribe waited until January 28, 2009, to file a land-into-trust application for the proposed off-reservation casino.

Despite the long delay, the city of Glendale says it wasn't informed about the project. "This was sprung upon the city by the Tohono O'Odhams without any warning," city attorney Craig Tindall told ABC15.

The tribe wants to work with the city to address casino issues. But Chairman Ned Norris, Jr. isn't confident that negotiations will happen.

"We don't need Glendale. The law is clear," Norris told ABC15. "Until my tribal council decides otherwise, this is the direction we're going with or without Glendale."

The Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C., will make a decision on the tribe's application.
