A non-recognized tribe in Rhode Island doesn't want the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut to build a casino in Massachusetts.
The Pokanoket Tribe of the Wampanoag Nation says its ancestral territory is in western Massachusetts. "We descend from that area," historian Clifford Soucy told The Waterbury Republican. "For other people to come in, that's wrong. The Mohegans themselves know they don't belong there."
The Mohegans want to open a casino in Palmer. "We're not pursuing reservation land in Massachusetts. We're pursuing a commercial gaming license to operate a commercial property in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," a tribal gaming executive said.
Commercial gaming is not yet legal in Massachusetts.
