The city of Glendale, Arizona, is laying claim to some of the land purchased by the Tohono O’odham Nation for an off-reservation casino.
The tribe wants 134 acres placed in trust for the casino. In hopes of thwarting the project, the city claims it annexed 46 acres of the property in 2001.
The annexation could affect the land-into-trust application because an act of Congress at issue in the transfer requires the tribe to purchase unincorporated land. But the tribe isn't worried about the city's claims.
“We're not going to ignore their desperate action here,” Chairman Ned Norris Jr. told The Arizona Republic. “I have every confidence we're going to demonstrate the nation has a right to move forward with this project.”
