The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma saw an increase in gaming revenues last year, the tribe said in a new report.
Cherokee Nation Enterprises reported $441.2 million between October 2007 and October 2008. Of that amount, $116 million was considered profit, an increase from $112 million from the prior year.
"Gaming is a tool to create self-sufficiency for Cherokees, whether that self-sufficiency is achieved though creating jobs or employing local vendors," Chief Chad Smith said, The Tulsa World reported. "Either way, the jobs and the money stay right here in our local communities."
The tribe employed 3,399 employees, an increase from the year prior.
