Opponents vow fight against Sycuan liquor license

Neighbors of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation will continue to fight liquor sales at the tribe's casino in southern California.

The state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control approved an interim license for the Sycuan Casino. Opponents, who have already lodged more than 300 protests, will have a chance to voice their concerns about traffic and drunken driving at an upcoming administrative hearing.

“The roads that access the casino are dangerous, curvy and dark,” William Bengen, the president of Residents Against Gaming Expansion, told The San Diego Union-Tribune “If you put alcohol in the mix, the potential for a killing field out there is great.”

The license only allows the tribe to offer liquor in four areas of the casino and to stop serving liquor after 1:30am. The tribe also must keep detailed records about liquor sales.
