Shingle Springs Band eliminates jobs at new casino

The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians has eliminated jobs at its recently opened Red Hawk Casino in northern California.

The casino employed 1,750 full-time equivalents when it opened in December. Now it's down to 1,500 full-time equivalents.

"We think it's primarily due to the economy," Lyle Berman, the chief executive of Lakes Entertainment, told The Sacramento Bee. "We are getting as many people as we expected," he added. "We're bringing in lots of bodies. We're still not getting the gaming revenue."

The tribe is the third in the area to eliminate jobs.
