The United Auburn Indian Community of California has laid off 5 percent of employees at the Thunder Valley Casino.
Fewer than 100 part-time employees were let go, a spokesperson said. The economy and competition from a nearby casino were blamed.
"The current situation at Thunder Valley is essentially a reflection of the economy," spokesperson Doug Elmets told The Sacramento Bee.
The tribe recently restarted work on a casino expansion but the project has been slimmed down.
An industry consultant said Thunder Valley is feeling pressure from the new casino owned by the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians.
