Quechan president cites economy in benefit flap

The Quechan Nation didn't want to close a bridge that leads to its casino due to economic concerns, President Mike Jackson said.

The tribe lost money at the Quechan Paradise Casino‎ when the Quechan Paradise Casino‎ was closed last year, Jackson said. The northern part of the bridge is on the reservation and brings customers to the casino.

The tribe offered alternative locations for the Sunset On The Bridge benefit, Jackson said. "I know this fundraiser was for a good cause, but in these economic times, we lost money (at the casino) last year during the closure of the bridge," he told The Yuma Sun.

Organizers canceled the benefit after learning of the tribe's concerns.
