A lawmaker in California is pursuing a state constitutional amendment to require local approval of proposed tribal casinos.
Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D), who has criticized "reservation shopping," said the amendment could require approval by voters or an intergovernmental agreement. He believes a bill could be signed this year.
Huffman said the U.S. Supreme Court
decision in Carcieri
v. Salazar could pose problems for tribes seeking casinos in the state. He plans to work with Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D) on gaming issues.
Feinstein is sponsoring a bill to restrict an off-reservation casino from expanding without state approval.
