Editorial: Oklahoma tribes moving beyond gaming

"With more than 90 tribal casinos in the state and bigger ones going up recently, it will be difficult for Indian nations to “push beyond gaming.”

This past Sunday, the Phoenix published a story in which area tribal leaders said they did not want their tribes to be known just for gaming.

David Stewart, chief executive officer of Cherokee Nation Enterprises, said he wanted the tribe to be known “for offering good businesses,” different ones from gaming, “and great career paths for people.”

We can appreciate Stewart’s sentiment. The state of Oklahoma is in a similar situation. "
