Two proposed off-reservation casinos in New York won't be affected by the U.S. Supreme Court
decision in Carcieri
v. Salazar, The Middletown Times Herald-Record reports.
The Seneca Nation and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, Band of Mohican Indians, were under federal jurisdiction in 1934. So they will be able to benefit from the land-into-trust provisions of the Indian Reorganization Act.
Both tribes want to open casinos in the Catskills, about 90 minutes north of New York City. The Senecas will seek Congressional approval, the Times Herald-Record reports, while the Stockbridge-Munsee Band will ask the Obama administration to review its proposal again.
