The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe says legalization of gaming in Massachusetts will bolster its plans for a $1 billion casino.
In August 2007, the tribe submitted two land-into-trust applications to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. One of them covers a casino in the town of Middleboro.
As the tribe waits for an answer, politicians in the state have taken a renewed interest in legislation that would authorize commercial casinos. That would ensure full-scale Class III gaming for the tribe, a spokesperson said.
"If the state approves (expanded) gaming, they will have an absolute right to build (a casino)," spokesperson Scott Ferson told The Cape Cod Times.
