Shinnecock Nation sees casino as boost to economy

The Shinnecock Nation of New York appears to have finally won over local officials, who are endorsing plans for a casino in Long Island.

Tribal leaders believe a casino will generate much-needed jobs and revenue. While the eastern end of Long Island is known for its wealthy enclaves, the reservation is the poorest area in the region.

“Our primary objective has always been to create jobs for our people," tribal trustee Lance Gumbs told The Hamptons Online. “ First you would see construction jobs then you will see all the ancillary economic benefits.”

Local officials are starting a task force to talk about the best place for a casino. The tribe anticipates somewhere within 25 miles of the reservation.
