Eastern Cherokees to vote on liquor sales at casino

Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians will vote on the sale of liquor at their North Carolina casino.

A petition gained enough signatures to schedule a referendum on the issue. A vote will take place in June 2009.

Supporters say liquor sales will increase revenues at the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino, which has seen a drop in visitor traffic. Per capita checks to tribal members have fallen 11 percent.

Opponents say liquor sales will lead to more addictions and social problems.
