Shinnecock Nation leader backs casino task force

A top Shinnecock Nation leader backed legislation to create a task force that would help the tribe open a casino.

Lance Gumbs, the senior trustee for the tribe, envisioned a "destination" resort. The legislation, introduced in the Suffolk County Legislature, would help identify a site for the facility.

As part of a lawsuit, the Bureau of Indian Affairs is agreeing to a timetable to consider the tribe's federal recognition petition. A hearing takes place today in federal court.
