Sycuan Band accused of offering Class III bingo

The California Gambling Control Commission meets this week to determine whether the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Indians is violating the tribal-state compact by offering "one-touch" bingo machines.

The tribe says the machines fall into the Class II category. But state officials say they are really Class III games, similar to slot machines.

That could be a problem because the compact limits the tribe to 2,000 slot machines at the Sycuan Resort. The 217 or so bingo games put the tribe over the limit.

The tribe signed a new compact that authorizes another 3,000 slot machines. But the tribe still hasn't ratified the deal even though it has been approved by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
