Officials in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, will meet next week to discuss their position on the controversial Ponca Tribe casino.
The tribe plans to build a casino in the county in a city called Carter Lake. The land is already in trust and the National Indian Gaming Commission said it can be used for gaming in a December
31, 2007, decision..
The state of Nebraska has sued the NIGC to block the casino because the only way to reach Carter Lake is through Nebraska. Class III gaming is not legal in Nebraska.
Class III gaming, however, is legal in Iowa and the tribe is offering to pay fees equivalent to those imposed on non-Indian casinos. But the state says it will file its own lawsuit against the NIGC, and Pottawattamie County will consider whether to join the fight.
