Artman seeks to influence North Fork casino bid

Assistant secretary Carl Artman has been busy in the weeks leading to his resignation today and his latest action could delay the off-reservation casino being sought by the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians of California.

The draft environmental impact statement for the $250 million project was released in February, after more than a year of delays. The tribe and local officials now worry that the process could be dragged out further.

Artman told the Bureau of Indian Affairs regional office in Sacramento on May 12 to study an alternative site for the casino. But regional director Dale Morris warned that the alternative site could pose environmental hazards.
