Maine governor vetoes Penobscot slots bill

Maine Gov. John Baldacci (D) vetoed a bill to authorize a slot machine facility for the Penobscot Nation.

The tribe wanted to operate up to 100 slot machines at a high-stakes beano facility on Indian Island. Lawmakers approved the bill but were unable to override Baldacci's veto.

In 2003, state voters legalized slot machines for a non-Indian facility but have rejected expanded gaming for Maine tribes.
