Illinois county approves Prairie Band casino deal

The board in DeKalb County, Illinois, voted 16-7 last week to approve a casino agreement with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas.

The agreement addresses revenue sharing, municipal services and other impacts of the tribe's proposed Class II facility. But the deal only becomes effective if the National Indian Gaming Commission says the tribe can use a 128-acre site in the county for a casino.

The tribe says a 1,280-acre reservation in the county has not been terminated by Congress. A ruling from the NIGC is expected next year.

Of the seven county board members who voted against the casino, all are Republicans.
