North Fork Rancheria awaits casino financing

The North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians signed a Class III gaming compact earlier this year for a casino in California.

But it could be some time before the tribe breaks ground on the $250 million project. Station Casinos, the tribe's partner, is having trouble securing financing for the casino and could end up filing for bankruptcy.

"Obviously this is a bad time to be trying to build a casino anywhere," analyst Joseph Weinert told The Fresno Bee.

Chairwoman Elaine Bethel-Fink wasn't sure what would happen if Station Casinos went bankrupt. "This economy was not anticipated," she told the paper.

The casino would be located near Madera, north of Fresno.
