"The Pokagon Band should be obliged to hand over accumulated interest on the nearly $20 million it is releasing to local units of government and the state of Michigan.
The Potawatomi Indian tribe held onto revenue sharing payments from the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo while it settled a dispute over Michigan's introduction of Club Keno. At the same time, it renegotiated a new compact that calls for annual revenue sharing payments on Sept. 30. The tribe's original 1998 compact called for the payments to begin last December.
Throughout the negotiations, the tribe assured the governments that their money was being set aside in interest-bearing accounts. Now that the tribe has its new deal, the Pokagons say the interest is theirs."
